11/18/03Trip to the bank:We had to go to the bank today to exchange NT currency. Mom and I went to a bank nearby and asked to exchange a few hundred dollars. It turned out to be quite a hassle; my mom had to pull out her passport to verify that she is who she said she is. Eventually we got our money; the exchange rate is currently nt34 for $1.

Taiwan food vendorThe city of Taipei has changed somewhat since the last time I visited, there were a lot more cars and scooters, more department store buildings, and fewer stalls and food vendors.

101 Building TaiwanWorld Trade Center, 101 Building:

We took the bus down to go see the new 101 building. It is currently the world’s tallest building. The building itself wasn’t all that great, it was a good 20 floors taller than all the building surrounding it, but it had a ‘old’ look that made it look like it was built 30 years ago. I found it strange that they had elevator shafts sticking out on the side of the building… I would think that they’d put multiple elevators on the inside instead of just one on the outside. The bottom 6 floors were all department stores. I took a look around inside and everything was so expensive! Some items cost more than it would’ve cost back in the States. I promptly left without buying anything.

Around the 101 Building (that’s what they call the structure) there were 2 more malls, each filled to the brim with stuff that was too expensive to tempt me. There was one store that sells everything for nt50. Mom and I bought a few trinkets. By the time we were done browsing it was evening and my feet were hurting.
